Evening all im new to this but in a spot of trouble.I hope im posting in the right place. Ive had a few problems with l200 over the past month first started with an oil leak at the back of rocker cover put on new gasket and that was that sorted. Then two weeks ago was heading to get her mot,d and a noisey rattle started pulled over and took a look and it seemed to me the turbo had gone so i nursed her to mot center and pasted no probs .So i got home and the engine seemed to be abnormally hot in around the bay so i took turbo of next day and got a new inner core put in it.That done put it all back together myself got the feeling all these parts had been off before i know the head an rad had been replaced before i bought it 8 months ago.So i checked all was in its place and coolant level topped up and checked oil level  ok and then turned the key and now i have a knocking sound in engine lower down than head and gets worse if u rev it and alot of smoke from exhaust . Not even sure if this is the original engine it has 165k on the clock now i,ve done a lot of cattle trailer work with it on the farm since buying it and not sure wot to do next. Any advise or suggestions much appreciated hill farmer in northern ireland.

Had exactly the same problem with mine at Christmas it turned out to be a snaped balance belt and caused  the cam belt to

Jump two  teeth  Shocked

New cam belt fitted timing marks all lined up and sounded like a new one  Grin

Hope this helps and hope you get it sorted  Wink

hi
first thing, take the top cam belt cover off (4 x 10mm bolts) and get a light and look down towards the bottom of the engine and see if the balance belt has not broken (there are 2 belts behind the front cover) main cam belt & balance belt, if the balance belt breaks it gets tangled in the cam belt causing it to jump teeth which in turn will cause the cam belt to throw the timing out and as lurch said it will cause the engine to knock sounding like the big ends have gone, If your balance belt has snapped then its the complete front off to replace the cam belt and tensioners, A lot of us leave the balance belt off but leave the balance belt tensioner and shafts on, ( the balance belt shafts have oil ways in them to move to engine oil about), they will run without the b/belt ok
Try this simple check first

hi
if the timing is only out by a couple of teeth then no further damage will be done, if its out to many then get your mechanic to check the rocker shaft and rockers, dont forget to tell your mechanic to use the rear timing marks on the engine and NOT the ones on the front lower cover
glad its worked out for you, plus once you join up you can look forward to a nice cuppa in the oc mud  Grin Grin

hi
sounds to me if the rocker shaft has broken or your mechanic has not timed it up correctly, don't go buying a new engine untill you have taken the rocker cover  off and double checked every thing, also make sure it is timed up correctly

Its a hard knaping noise but comes from lower in engine rather than higher if that makes any sense. Will go threw everything with mechanic on monday he is very thorough and will check all areas .

Sounds like big end bearings worn, piston tapping on bottom of head/valves. Slight misfire at idle?

Try the simple things first. With the engine running at idle go along the injectors and slack off each one in turn to find out which cylinder is causing the knock. Remove that injector and take it to a diesel shop and ask them to test it to see if it's sticking.
An injector with the pintle stuck open will make a horrendous noise on an indirect injection engine and will sound just like a big end has gone.

Personally, I'd do the first oil change at around 1000 miles, but check with Milners for their advice on their own engine.

Sounds just like my truck also a 2003 . The engine started knocking and when the engine was stripped down the crank had been flapping about and the big ends ,mains caps and crank were ruined. Had a new Milners engine a couple of years ago and no problems since
