Hi all
Problems with 2003 animal K74 starter.
My starter motor starts to turn the engine and then kicks straight out and just spins.
I have had the motor out and had a look inside but cant see anything amiss. All seems to work well enough on the bench.
Do you think it could be the solenoid not holding the pinion gear onto the flywheel?
If so does anyone know where I can get a solenoid as the motor itself is in good condition?
Many thanks in advance
Nigel

Solved.
On stripping the motor down I found that the Bendix clutch mechanism was broken.
It should only spin in one direction, mine was spinning both ways therefore giving no drive to the gear and flywheel.
Thanks for you replies.
cheers

Hey Major Tom, I have the same problem, my gear is rotating both ways. Where did you get the part from? would my local factor have this?

I just spoke to my mechanic and he tells me that this type of starter is suppose to have the gear moving both ways, under load, it is likely to be the clutch but is it not a bendix clutch. So I think the best way is to get a new starter anyway. I found out that if I get my old one to the local motor factor they can supply a new one to 111.00 which is better than I though.

Oh well, between the battery last week and this, I beginning to wonder if this car is falling apart  Huh  Angry

Hi Bib
It defo shouldnt rotate both ways, other wise it wouldnt work. If yours is the same model as mine of course.
I got mine from ebay and fitted it myself, not too difficult with a few basic mechanical skills.
Here is the link:

You were right, my mechanic obviously got that one wrong.

Unfortunately I needed it repaired quickly so I got a new starter, 112 from my local factor and I returned my old one so I got a discount.

Still quite a saving if I had had time to wait....
